Sonseca to Toledo

Our first stop of the day was in the sleepy little village of Ajofrín where to be frank, the signs were unpromising.

However we were in need of a 'cafe con leche' (considered to be the fuel of the Camino) in order to progress, so we went in. There, we were met with the most amazing smell of baking..... Madeleines straight out of the oven which we were given to taste - wonderful!

So we carried on, past the Hermitage of Ajofrín

And a rusty bicycle stuck in a fence.

There was even a working water pump.

We could see blue lakes and snow-capped mountains in the distance.

On the outskirts of Layos we came across the site of their Calvary, used in the re-enactment of the Passion during Holy Week.

Walking at a speed of approximately 4-5km/hr allows us to see much more

We got our first glimpse of Toledo from here.

From then on various familiar buildings could be seen along the Camino as we approached the city.

and various weirs and bridges over the Río Tajo

There is a steep climb into Toledo and we'd promised ourselves a trip on the long escalator that hugs the side of the hill to the top but today that wasn't going to happen....

Today was the day of the massive electricity outage across the whole of the Iberian Peninsula.
